Miami and Florida are well known for being the tropical fruit Mecca of the United States. This is the only place in the continental U.S. where you can find produce like jackfruit at the store, and then a drive about an hour south will lead you to longan groves, fields of dragon fruit, and farm stands where you can sample things like sapodilla, black sapote, egg fruit and so much more!
Though there are dozens of options to try, we picked the top six on our list to tell you a little more about!
Guava
Guava is a tropical fruit that grows in dry or humid heat. Both the beautiful pink fruit of the guava plant and the leaves are edible! The fruit is most often eaten as a snack, while the leaves are commonly boiled into an herbal tea. Guavas have a similar texture to pear, but with more crunch. Guava fruits are amazingly rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber.
Jackfruit
Jackfruit is the largest tree fruit in the world and can reach up to 80 pounds in weight! Jackfruit easily flips between sweet and savory depending on ripeness, which tends to make it a great healthy meat alternative. Jackfruit benefits include being heart-healthy, fighting inflammation and promoting wound healing.
Blood Orange
Blood oranges are most well known for their vibrant and beautiful crimson colored flesh. Their flavor is a mix of sweet orange infused with grapefruit. Benefits include immune support, high nutrient density, pregnancy health support and gut health support.
Cacao
Cacao brings two versatile flavors. While the flesh is sweet and slightly citrusy, the seed is rich like dark chocolate or fresh coffee - both great for different uses! Cacao is a great source of B vitamins, which help make sure the body functions the way it should, helping convert food into cell energy. B vitamins also help regenerate blood cells, and maintain the overall health of our cells.
Monstera Deliciosa
You may have heard the super rare fruit Monstera Deliciosa as it just went viral on TikTok! It has a sweet flavor, similar to pineapple and mango, with a candy like quality, and a banana like texture. It has interesting honeycomb scales that fall off as it ripens - and you can and should only eat it as it is ripe! It is rich in Vitamin C helping our bodies fight against free radicals.
Red Dragon fruit
This vibrant red/pink and mildly sweet fruit grows on a cactus vine! The fruit's texture is similar to a kiwifruit because of its black, crunchy seeds. Red Dragonfruit is known for reducing risk of diabetes and cancer, boosting immunity and aiding digestion.
